A Note from Pastor Steve

As one of those technophobes who has been dragged kicking and screaming into the computer age, I have been hesitant to place sermons on our Web page. Sermons are to be heard and experienced, not read. Sermons always have a context — that context being the shared life of a congregation, the pastoral relationships that have developed, and the overall life of the city in which the church dwells. Thus, I write sermons to be preached and heard, and not read, for it is when they are preached and heard that they (hopefully) come alive. When reading a sermon, one misses inflections, gestures, voice modulations and so much more that make a sermon a sermon.

That said, I know that I have been shaped by reading sermons, thus I offer these to you. As my good friend and former interim here at Idlewild, Roland Perdue, said, "Read these at your own peril, and imagine how much better it is to be here and hear."

--Stephen R. Montgomery
