Recreation Ministries

Idlewild Recreation is the largest integrated church-community recreation program in the city, nurturing participants from both the church and the community at large. The programs demonstrate the love of Christ through organized recreation by providing positive role models, capable leadership in a Christian environment, safe facilities, and an inclusive spirit. The church’s gym and recreation programs are open to all in the community.

Special Basketball Camp - July 11-14

Former Harlan Globetrotter Michael Douglas will host a special basketball camp for boys and girls ages 7-14 July 7-11 at Idlewild Presbyterian Church. Cost is $150. Participants will learn basketball skills while having lots of fun. Please contact the Recreation office at 725-4165 for details ASAP.

Baseball/Softball Registration

Teams are divided by grade level. Practices started in mid-April and the games will go through the first week of July.

Soccer for Children of All Ages

This is offered for children of all ages. Registration is now open for Fall 2008 soccer season. Click here for a registration form to print and mail. All costs and deadlines are on the registration form.

Idlewild Soccer Camp with Coach Andy Marcinko

Idlewild Soccer Camp with the Rhodes College coaching staff headed by Andy Marcinko will be July 28-August 1, 2008. This great camp is for ages 7-14. Times for the camp are 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Ccost is $100.Call the Idlewild Recreation office for more details or to sign up. This is the best soccer camp value in the city! Coach Marcinko works with the Olympic Development Program and young soccer players have everything to gain from his experience.

Volleyball

We are offering a recreational volleyball league for adults. Registration is during the month of February, and games will begin the end of March. Call the recreation office for more details.

Outdoor Challenges, Adventures and Trips

Adult Outdoor Challenge

Have you ever wanted to do some of the things that our youth are doing on those cool adventure trips. Whether you are in college or have kids in college, here’s your chance. You will have the opportunity to go hiking, whitewater rafting on the Chattooga River, kayaking, caving, rappelling, rock climbing, mountain biking, and more as we travel to East Tennessee to build relationships and enjoy the great outdoors. Dates/costs TBA.

Senior High Outdoor Challenge

This trip is for youth entering 9th through exiting 12th graders. Don’t spend that last week before school in front of the TV! High school students craving adventure will enjoy exploring new caves, splashing down new rivers, and climbing to new heights—plus an all-day whitewater rafting trip down the scenic Chattooga River. Cost is $480. Space is limited. 2008 dates to be announced soon. Call recreation at 725-4165 to sign up or for more info.

Junior High Outdoor Challenge Camp - July 18-25, 2008

Idlewild campers who have completed grades 5-7 enjoy the great outdoors at a camp in east Tennessee and western North Carolina. Challenging activities include a ropes course, rappelling, canoeing, caving, kayaking, swimming, rafting, mountain biking, hiking, worship, and games. Cost is $490. Call the recreation office, 725-4165, to sign up and for more details.

Mt. LeConte Trip - July 13-16, 2008

The group will stay in Gatlinburg Sunday night, and hike up Mt. LeConte on Monday. After the hike down participants will stay another night in Gatlinburg before heading home. Call 725-4165 for details and cost.

NaCoMe Spring and Fall Retreats

April 25-27, 2008 and October 10-12, 2008

St. Louis Baseball Trip - June 14-15, 2008

Idlewild Baseball fans will be boarding the bus for a trip to see the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Philadelphia Phillies. Call 725-4165 for more details. Cost per family: $110 for the first person, $100 for the second, and $90 for other family members.

Craft Classes and Ongoing Projects

The Pottery Studio

Pottery classes are Thursday nights at 6:00 and Friday mornings at 9:30. Come and learn to make beautiful works on the wheel. Beginners encouraged! Call 725-4165 for more info.

Ceramics Painting Class

Let’s seize the clay together at a fun ceramics painting class. First, you choose a ceramics piece from an online catalog, so it will be waiting for you to glaze at your class. Then, join the fun in the crafts studio. Costs vary ($10–$25) depending on selected item. 2008 dates to be announced. Glass Fusing Classes

Join Brian Maness for a one-night glass fusing class on Monday, February 18, in the craft studio. See what you can create—plates, pendants, coasters, etc. Brian will fuse the pieces in the kiln for you. Class begins at 6:30. Cost is $20. Jewelry-Making Class

This fun class is an introduction to basic stringing, tools and stringing materials. Participants will make a bracelet and two pairs of earrings as their project. (Next class TBA.)

Candle-Making Class

Want to learn how to make your own scented candles? This class will take you through the process of making beautiful scented candles. Participants will make two candles as their project. (Next class TBA.)

Stained Glass Class

Come and learn the skills of leaded and foil stained glass windows, while making a beautiful creation for your garden or flower beds. The class costs $40 and meets from 6:00 to 8:00 each Wednesday. Wood Carving Class

Learn how to use hand blades to carve small figurines. Cost is only $8 for the entire class! Call 725-4165 for info.

The Annual Sole to Soul 5K Race - September 27, 2008

The Sole to Soul 5K will start and finish at Idlewild Presbyterian Church at 1750 Union Avenue in Midtown Memphis. The race will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and will take place rain or shine. Race officials and volunteers will be located along the course. We have a fun new course through Midtown with a water station located around the halfway mark. Traffic control will be provided by the Memphis Police Department. After the race, food and drink will be provided by Schnucks, with live entertainment by Flashing Yellow! The race benefits First Book.

Fun Seasonal Church Events

Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper
Fat Tuesday is our annual pancake supper and talent show. Come and enjoy good food and fun. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children and dinner will begin at 6:00. Call the recreation office for more details at 725-4165. And don't miss the Fabulous Fat Tuesday Talent Show!

Easter Egg Hunt will be 10:30 until noon on Saturday, March 22, 2008. Please plan to bring a dozen plastic eggs with individually wrapped candy to the church the week before. There will be arts and crafts, games, and food— maybe even have a piñata!

Halloween Carnival
Come dressed in costume or accompany someone who is, and join in an evening of games for the whole family. This year's carnival will be on Wednesday, October 29, 2008. $3 for children, adults free. Carnival-style dinner is served before, only $5 per person.

Dance Groups at Idlewild

Three different dance groups meet at Idlewild Church each week, and you are invited to join in the fun (plus great exercise). All dance groups are free, and open to singles and couples, young and young at heart. Click here for more information on these dance groups.

Scottish Country Dance

 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, 7:30-10:00 p.m. in the T.K. Young Room. Dancing Instructors: Ernest Kelly and Emily Smith.

Contra Dance 

1st and 3rd Fridays of each month, 7:30-10:00 p.m. in the T.K. Young Room. Live music provided by Blarney Fife. Instructor/caller: Martha Phillips.

Cajun and Zydeco Dance 

2nd and 4th Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Room 110E, Jones Education Building.
